ISCI International
Hockey Festival 2006
On Thursday 25th and Friday 26th May,
The Rolls-Royce Hockey Youth Challenge was conducted at the Bung Karno Senayan
Hockey Pitch with 8 teams comprising young men (under 20 years old), mainly
from high schools and universities around Jakarta (1 from Bandung), playing
11-a-side hockey. There were also 4 teams of young ladies competing for
the ISCI / Rolls-Royce Cup 2006 on the only synthetic hockey pitch in
Jakarta. With two professional coaches offering advice and assistance on
the Friday the opportunity to learn and develop hockey was patently evident in
the application and enthusiasm with which the teams approach their finals
games. In the Boys competition the Cup winner was Club 39 with runners up
– Dipo (a State School, in Jalan Diponegoro), in a high standard match.
“The quality of the guys pleasantly surprised me” said Andre Brown, one of the
coach’s from Hong Kong. Player of the boys tournament was adjudged to be
Syafrie of Dipo who was awarded a new Rage hockey stick brought in from the UK
by Rolls-Royce. In the Girls competition it was Taruna Bakti from
Bandung, that took the cup in a close final beating London School 1-0.
Player of the girls tournament was Tiffany from Tarbak, “A remarkable talent
that needs to be nurtured and developed via events like this that allow young
people to come together in serious, but fun competition with good organisation,
competent umpires and a high quality pitch” said Mike Gray of Rolls-Royce,
traditional sponsors of this event.
Immediately following on the Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th,
the International Sports Club of Indonesia together with the Indonesian Hockey
Federation ran the Jababeka 8-a-side Hockey Festival with a record 11 overseas
touring club teams from Switzerland, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and
Malaysia. This is the 7th time this event has been held and by
all accounts it was a roaring success, with brilliant weather, high quality
hockey, lots of new friends made and the usual icing of Indonesian hospitality
and warmth. In the Cup competition it was ‘bridesmaid’ time for STEI
(Sekolah Tinggi Ekonomi dan Ilmu), which made the final for the fifth time in
succession and again finished runner up, this time to the Royal Selangor Club
of Kuala Lumpur. An unusually high standard was played after two quite
exhausting days of games with RSC winning 2-0. In the Plate final Mandala
from Bandung pipped the Flying Hoppers from Switzerland 5-1 in an action packed
game. Pak S.D. Darmono, President Director of Jababeka remarked “It
was tremendous to see so many people from so many countries around the pitch,
all happy just to be able to play hockey together. I am very pleased that
we were able to sponsor this event.” As a mark of respect for the victims
of the Yogyakarta earthquake, a minutes silence was observed by all present
before the finals. Home side ISCI slipped out of the competition in the
semi finals losing 2-3 to the Flying Hoppers in extra time.
