Indonesia Youth Hockey Challenge 2004

On Friday 21 May 2004, at the Hockey Pitch in Gelora Bung Karno Senayan Jakarta, the Indonesia Youth Hockey Challenge 2004 took place, featuring 6 boys and 6 girls teams from local high schools and universities around Jakarta.  This is the fourth time this tournament has been run, in conjunction with the ISCI-PHJ organised Kabelvision International 8-a-side Hockey Festival, and once again this junior tournament was proudly sponsored by Rolls-Royce and the Hardrock Café.  Other sponsors of the weekend were Kabelvision, Coca-Cola, Bir Bintang, Le Meridien, Bugils, Ades and MS Taxes.

A distinct lack of goals in the round robin events left all teams standing on the same points and goal difference so the ranking for finals was decided by penalty flicks.

This tournament was a ‘fun game’ format with 11-a-side but only 15 minutes per game, one way.  Final games that were drawn at full time were decided by penalty shoot-out with 3 players from each side taking penalty flicks to decide the winner.

All of the semi finals were keenly contested and several went to extra time.  This generated lots of interest and enthusiasm from the spectators, although the nervous players looked just to be happy it was over.

The Finals were played under lights, with LSPR looking the favourites in the Girls Final against Gunadarma, having had lots of chances and overwhelming opposing sides but failing to capitalize by converting chances into goals.  LSPR created many scoring opportunities again but it was a scrambled push by Jihan that went between the goal keeper’s legs from a melee in the ‘D’ that earned them the 1-0 win.

The Boys final between SMU 39 and SMU 16 was evenly matched with a 0-0 scoreline at full time and a nail-biting series of penalty flicks saw the teams still drawn (2-2) after 3 flicks.  The crowd involvement was intense with gasps, cheers and encouragement and even a bit of singing and Calypso-style drum beats.  The penalty flicks then moved on to ‘sudden death’, which eventually saw SMU 16 running out happy and vocal winners.

Once again some very attractive trophies were presented to the winners and runners-up, courtesy of Rolls-Royce.

Many thanks to Mike Gray and Ichsan Mohamad of Rolls-Royce for their sponsorship and efforts in preparing for and running the tournament, and to Hardrock Café, Armo of PHJ, Chris Wren who co-ordinated the Umpires, all those who umpired and all participants and spectators.
