Bang Yos Tournament (Governor’s Cup) 2005 Reports

Saturday 11 June

Game 1                v        39HC         4-0

Paul Noonan, 2 goals, Deny Fahruddin 2

A 3.15 pm game, so almost our normal slot on a Saturday, and the usual straggling turn up with people arriving minutes before scheduled kick-off saw many uneasy glances towards the clock and we must have counted players about 10 times, but in the end we had 16 players and the 10 minute late start as the organizers caught up with paperwork allowed us time to get make-up and short corners perfected.  This was a game ISCI dominated and the score could have been 7-0.  We did however manage to score from a short-corner, something that rarely happens in the ISCI Twilight Zone.

Game 2                v        DIPO         1-0

Deny 1

Probably our toughest game of the tourney as they came out very aggressive, determined to knock-off ISCI, and had many chances.  ISCI eventually got on top but it took a special goal from Deny (disputed by the opposition who said it went into the side netting) with a deft deflection that came off the keepers pads and went in from a cross from Ichang.

Saturday 18 June

Game 3                v        Pancasila           3-0

Paul 2, Deny 1

Another 3.15 pm start and more nervous glances towards the car park, but again a great turnout with 15 people.  ISCI were in control from the start and created many good chances that just went wide.  Several classic pieces of play with the ball brought down the left, passed into the centre, flicked out to the right then fierce crosses into the D for Deny and Paul to dive on for attempts at goal.  However we lead by only 1 goal for a long time and only late goals to Deny then Paul sealed the deal as it should have been done.

Game 4                v        98HC         2-0

Paul 2

A late start with Baden nursing a hammy strain and Ken on the sidelines after stopping a ball in the previous game with his shinguard just below the knee -  a sin for which he was punished with a free-hit against !  ISCI was in control and had most of the play but lacked discipline and structure, lots of chances but no goals. With a changing of the guard half way through and Chris Wren brought on, the natural order was restored and Paul duly delivered on all the hard work with two well taken goals one from a short corner.

Sunday 19 June

Game 5 Qtr Final        v           Alumni        2-0

Paul 2

The 9.50am start seemed to encourage and from a list of 9, the call was answered and 15 players gathered (with Olaf under severe marital stress).  The old stagers had beaten ISCI before in tourneys and they stacked the backline yet again to make scoring difficult.  ISCI carried the ball and created opportunities but it was hard to get through.  Several short corners went unrewarded until Paul delivered from the left side.

Game 6 Semi        v        STEI           1-0 (0-0)

Ichang 1 goal from the dribble off

The highest standard of game we played during the tourney with quality hockey from both sides, lots of slick passing and good pace on and off the ball.  Faizal was magnificent in the middle, tackling and making the oppo work for every pass, as were Steve Laux and Scotty Gerling in defence keeping out a very good team.  We did create more chances than STEI and with only a couple of minutes to go a deft backstick from Ken to Paul in the D seemed to have set up the winner, but it went just wide into the side netting.

A draw created even more drama with a dribble off scheduled.  Deny, Ichang and Otong bravely stepped (or were pushed) forward.  Luckily Deny won the toss and elected for Marcus to defend the fist attempt (to put all the pressure on STEI he said !).  Marcus, arguably the best keeper in Indonesia, pulled off a great save (actually a block, a stop and a kick).  Then Ichang took the stage and, following orders, faked left, pulled the ball right (which their keeper knew would happen, and he parried) but Ichang recovered and slotted the goal from close range !  Marcus’ turn again and once more a miraculous save wit the ball ending up over the sideline.  Deny only had to score to seal the game and our place in history.  He faked left, pulled the ball right, the keeper deflected the ball, but Deny recovered and with the goals wide open, Deny hit …. 2 inches to the left of the goals !  Marcus once more took centre stage against long time rival, and friend, Armunanto.  Armo faked, feinted and fooled, but Marcus just hit the ball away ….  1-0 to ISCI and Otong did not have to bother – ISCI through to the final of a Cup !  Who would have thought ….

Game 7 Final        v        Syznazyet          2-1

Deny 1, Paul 1

Against the League champions this was always going to be a tough encounter but once again ISCI stepped up the pace and was largely in command, creating opportunities for Deny and Paul, although Syznazyet did create chances and Otong, Mirsat and Scotty had to be in fine form at the back.  Kieran was impressive mostly because of the number of miss-hits, near misses and miss-kicks until finally he connected and struck Ken in the middle of the back.  Offers to retire and let the Chocolate Martini’s work more of their magic from the sidelines went unheeded.  ISCI went ahead with a well taken goal by Deny after good piece of play from Faizal and Ichang and we led for much of the game.  But with 4 minutes left to play (20 minute games) a great deflection at the top of the D by Aris found Ocik on the goal line for a well-taken goal and it was all square.  ISCI stuck to the game plan and with a classic piece of play from the backline to the middle, out wide left into Kieran in the middle, out to Ichang on the right who crossed hard into the D and Paul slotted the winner with only 2.5 minutes to play.

The team (over all days) :  Ken Allan (Capt), Deny Fahruddin, Chris Wren, Mohamad Ichsan, Faizal Laude, Mirsat, Steve Laux, Baden Taylor, Marcus Yantewo (keeper), Scott Gerling, Paul Noonan, Kieran Norris, Paul Quinlivan, Thomas Bagus, Olaf Bluemke, Suthee, Vivek Thomas.

Paul 9 goals, Deny 5, Ichang 1
